water in striped butte canyon

Post by outlierrn » Thu Oct 25, 2007 12:19 pm

So, last years spring trip got cancelled for a broken collar bone. I'd like to mountainbike into striped butte for an overnight but wonder about water in the fall. When I was last in the Valley there was plenty of water in warm springs, but it was a wet spring. My Tom Harrison shows several springs near the butte, but Im hoping for some local information. Anyone been that way recently? Thanks

PS, what's the general opinion of the Harrison maps?

There is a spring at the dead cottonwood just below the geologist cabin that seems to flow well.

My son and I just drove through Striped Butte from east to west. While we drove that route in the dead of summer (July 14) there had been a bunch of rain at DV that week, but you should still be able to find water:

- Warm Springs cabin
- Anvil Springs Cabin (just SW of Striped Butte)
- Russell Cabin (just south of Anvil Springs Cabin) (was dry when were there though)
- There's also water near a cabin in Goler wash, but I can't recall the name of it. It's about a mile or so west of the Barker Ranch cutoff.

Barker Ranch had signs of water, but it was dry the day we were there.

Good luck.

Al

Some pics of the above:

Warm Springs Cabin, lots of water in July, '08:

Striped Butte:

Anvil Springs, very visible when traveling west on the Striped Butte road/trail, lots of water at the spring, not sure I'd drink it though:

Russel Camp, also very visible, no water here in July:
