On/off topic, but at Golden Gate, when they installed the new fence around the bases of the bridge back in 2008/9, they specific designed it so every ~100ft there was a special gate in the fence that would fit a sideways litter/body through. Adaptive engineering b the NPS/DHS.

His photos bounce around, but are a session of him driving up Beatty Cutoff from DV, stopping at various points, walking a few feet off the road and taking a photo. His most recent photos (not posted here) taken 2 hours ago, show him just off the road near DV Buttes pointing to the backside of the B...

If you have a Costco account, try Costco. I use them for large prints on canvas, but they do all sorts of printing.

Poking around at the cited reference and beyond, I'd place a bet that the MBB is somewhere along the Echo Canyon road. You don't have to say where it is, but give me a high five if I'm right :) Nope... Right side of the park though... Interesting enough, the one I found, isn't listed nor are any of...

More please! My guess was someone wanted lightning to hit it, and melt the glass into a blob or somehow allow the marbles to absorb UV/radiation? Or used to study the patina that forms on the marbles??

It's been a number of years since I last was in the area of the MBB, and it was something that I stumbled upon one afternoon while hiking ridge tops. Some questions answered: 1. Yes it was real. 2. Yes it existed after I found it. 3. I've only heard of one other person finding it a year or so after ...

Only if permission is granted from the Superintendent, and/or a research permit is issued. Only other folks who could legally enter a mine in DEVA are the parks AML staff.

Mines are illegal to enter in DEVA as of ~July 2012. It is listed in the 2012 and 2013 Superintendent’s Compendium:
All mines and caves are closed to the public unless otherwise posted.
This closure is for visitor health and safety and for resource protection.

It is a NPS project, NPS owns the road. Major road paving projects nor thier funding come from the park level, it is part of a cyclic maintenance program for park owned roads that comes from NPS regional maintenance funds and/or the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The project sounds like a ch...

Sounds interesting, got any pics? The 2012 USGS Telescope Peak topo map says it uses July 2010 imagery. On that the site appears unchanged. But going by what you said, maybe the additions are more recent than that? I want to say it was late 2011ish? It was the reason why analog cell service stopped...

From what the ranger told me they need the radio station atop Rogers peak For several reasons, I'm still skeptical the comm installation up there has anything to do with the military. Though I do wonder what the west-pointing microwave antenna on the tower links to. There should be a similar antenn...

Snowy Trip 11/22

I hadn't planned on driving through DV on my recent trip but the weather forced me too (not that it was a bad thing). I left the a friends house in Ridgecrest the morning of the 22nd under a light rain. My plan was to take Hwy 395 north to Bishop and then Hwy 6 to Hwy 95 north home to WA. I had a la...
