Death Valley Degrees of Difficulty - Bullion Parts Per Billion

The next time I'm walking on and wandering over the mineral-infused surface of Death Valley National Park I'll keep the temperature of my "gold fever" down by keeping this image in my mind's eye. No wonder things did not "pan out" for most of those vintage prospectors. Another perspective is that fo...

I Have Something In Common With Death Valley Scotty and Albert Einstein, do you?

Here's your main clue, and please, no jokes about The Three Stooges! :) http://salamandersociety.com/deathvalley/DVD-Scotty-Albert.jpg It appears that the closest Einstein ever came to Death Valley was with his visits to the Petrified Forrest in Arizona, Balboa Park in San Diego, CA, and The San Fra...

Re: Have you lost your mind

I guess that's stoned out of your head. I'm a sucker for puns so like your comeback. Another caption for the stone-brain image: The remains of Death Valley Scotty's long lost mining partner, Al Zheimer have been exhumed and are now on display at the Furnace Creek Visitors Center. I know this corny ...

Re: Racetrack Playa has water

Randy O, okay your route makes much more sense than the one I was guessing at. What a great way to spend a week!

BTW - what camera are you using. Your images are coming through to my computer with splendid popping colors.

Re: Randy O's route

Those images are so colorful and crisp. So it appears to me that you drove from Ubehebe Crater cutoff out to the Racetrack, then west toward Lippencott, snapped the image of the playa water, backtracked past the Racetrack to Ubehebe, then north past Crankshaft Junction to Eureka Dunes east side, to ...

Re: Racetrack Playa has water

Great shot, which I believe is looking east over the playa to Tin Mountain? Did you take the shot? If can you post more images of your trip? This may be where the water came from on 12/26/2019 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cs4Qnp6g_fw or getting turned around by three feet deep snow drifts https:/...

Re: Funeral Slot Scramble - Chimney Fall Stop

What does that big stone arrow near the beginning mark? Yup, that stone arrow is a weird one. It actually points directly west up that earthwork which one can follow for a quarter mile or so rather than trudge the streambed before dropping back into it on the way back to Texas Springs. I would have...

Re: Funeral Slot Scramble - Chimney Fall Stop

Very nicely done movie! But I would have liked to see more images of the areas you explored and less Google Earth overviews. You might enjoy visiting the narrows accessed by continuing through the tall, narrow slot that's on the left in the main canyon just past the turnoff for Funeral Slot. That s...

Funeral Slot Scramble - Chimney Fall Stop

Scramble up, over, and around The Funeral Slot Canyon on a lovely winter day December 2019. The colors match those of The Artist's Palette. The eastern edge of the drainage is bordered by a large multi-colored fault line. Several dry falls are difficult to bypass. I was stopped again by the Chimney ...

Mixing Jealousy & Admiration For DV NPS Staff

Over the eight years since I discovered Death Valley National Park, I've had the pleasure of meeting and corresponding with ten NPS staffers. They have been generous with their time and wisdom about the park while increasing my awareness and sensitivity to keeping the park in pristine shape for othe...

Re: Goodbye to Borax Haystacks & Shovel Town

IIRC they're only about 1/4 mile or so from the Badwater Road. Candace, thanks for your intel. I hope to check this out during my next visit to DV which can't be soon enough. I have as much fun wandering around the valley flats as I do the canyons and mountains. Especially around the sunrises, suns...

Re: King Midas Explore Alternative Return Route

I agree it would be nice if the public could volunteer to help maintain some of the old mining trails Over Labor Day 2019 while resting for part of the day I toted my five-pound pickax up the Telescope Peak trail and performed improvements as a show of gratitude for whoever created the trail and th...

Re: King Midas Explore Alternative Return Route

There was a post in response to your previous attempt to get to King Midas that mentioned a scary washout on the trail near the end. I had not had anything I considered challenging when I did it on the order of a decade ago. I wonder what you saw? A decade could make a substantial difference due to...
