Re: November Visit

The Eureka Dunes are usually accessible by any vehicle. The road is usually washboarded, so that can be annoying and make you go pretty slow. There will be people at the Mesquite Flat dunes and Badwater. For Badwater, hike a mile or two out and you will be beyond almost everyone. The dunes cover a v...

Re: August 17-24: White-Whitney-10460 (and, oh yeah, Bald)

No problem! I found one from Telescope that turned out much better than I thought. From Telescope, just look directly over Sentinel and slightly to the right. I had zoomed in for 10460, Porter, and Sentinel and was blessed with San Gorgonio by accident. I had to darken this shot a lot, but very plea...

Re: August 17-24: White-Whitney-10460 (and, oh yeah, Bald)

I learned one other interesting thing today....San Gorgonio can be seen both from Whitney (190 miles) and from Telescope (143 miles). Since I wasn't looking for it, I didn't get anything like what I got of Charleston, but was still able to identify it in shots I took from Whitney and Telescope. Ther...

Labeled version. Please correct, or let me know of anything else that could be identified.

Re: August 17-24: White-Whitney-10460 (and, oh yeah, Bald)

Hunter Mountain is partially hidden by the Inyos, but I think that is the top of the mountain near left behind the Inyos. Past the Panamints would be the Funerals. Looking at Google Maps, I think the range immediately in front of the Spring Mountains (Charleston) is the northern end of the Nopah Ra...

Re: August 17-24: White-Whitney-10460 (and, oh yeah, Bald)

As a photograph, this shot is nothing special....but it is now one of my prized shots. This is looking over top of DVNP from Mt Whitney over to Mt Charleston, 146 miles away. It looks over the Inyos, the Panamints (around the area of Harrisburg Flats), and a couple other ranges. The last one before ...

Re: May 10-20, 2019: Ballarat -> Butte Valley -> Panamint Pass loop, plus day hikes

On a clear day, the red rock area where those trees are is unmistakable. You have to descend about 1500 vertical feet to get to the top of it, and the easiest way to do it is from the ridge that meets the trail about 9900 ft:

Re: May 10-20, 2019: Ballarat -> Butte Valley -> Panamint Pass loop, plus day hikes

I love viewing your images so thanks for posting them. I keep forgetting how truly expansive DV is. My favorite shots of yours were of The Stipped Butte, The Panamint Smoke Stack, and the one where you labeled all of the peaks along the Panamint Ridge Line. Time in DV is time well spent and thanks ...

Re: August 17-24: White-Whitney-10460 (and, oh yeah, Bald)

I used to do summer biking, but the last couple of years I have added an August trip, so have wanted my workouts to be more directly related to hiking. My spring trips are more grueling, because they are backpacking, while all of these were day hikes. Winter training is with the heavy backpack in th...

Re: August 17-24: White-Whitney-10460 (and, oh yeah, Bald)

Of course you can cite it! I don't want people getting sick! Yes, I see, you got one lower night in there, that's not bad. As for how far to go down... once you are sick, I dunno about the magic of 8K. Part of my problem was that although I thought of myself as "down off the mountain", in fact slee...

Re: August 17-24: White-Whitney-10460 (and, oh yeah, Bald)

Wow, what a story! That's great info. Do you mind if I cite it? Probably easier for readers if I copy and paste, though could just link to this page, if you'd prefer. After the two nights at 11,700, I spent essentially 16 hours below 8,400 ft, (most of that at 8000 ft where my campsite was). I've fr...

Re: August 17-24: White-Whitney-10460 (and, oh yeah, Bald)

Bald was not well-planned. There were so many options that I just winged it. I definitely did not come down the easiest route. This is the hillside I came down: https://caltopo.com/map.html#ll=36.32023,-117.1007&z=17&b=sat&o=t&n=0&a=sf I remember seeing a wind break someone had built near 10460. It ...
